MBS031 Highlights of the Birth and Early Life of Jesus
In this study, we will learn about the birth and early life of Yeshua (Jesus) in the context of first-century Jewish background and customs.
One thing to notice in dealing with the birth and early life of Yeshua is that all we can know is found only in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. It is only Matthew and Luke who give us the actual story of the birth and early life of Jesus, not Mark or John. However, Matthew and Luke tell the story from two different viewpoints: Matthew tells the story of the birth and early life of Yeshua from Joseph’s perspective, while Luke tells the same story from Mary’s perspective. In the Gospel of Matthew, Joseph plays the active role, but Mary plays a passive role. Matthew records what Joseph is thinking, but not what Mary is thinking. For example, in Matthew 1:20, it is recorded how angels came to Joseph, but no angels appear to Mary. On the other hand,
Luke’s Gospel tells the story from Mary’s perspective. In this Gospel, Mary plays the active role, while Joseph plays the passive role. In Luke 1:26, it is recorded how angels appear to Mary, but no angels appear
to Joseph. Luke reports what Mary is thinking, but not what Joseph is thinking.
