And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write. These things says the Son of God, who has his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like unto burnished brass.
Revelation 2:18

The Book of Revelation mentions four women, all of whom are representative of something else. This study of these four women and what they represent can be divided into four sections: the woman Jezebel, the sun clothed woman, the great harlot, and the Bride and Wife of the Messiah

I. THE WOMAN JEZEBEL—REVELATION 2:18–29
The first of these four women is the woman Jezebel. The seven churches of the Book of Revelation represent seven periods of the history of the visible church. The particular period that this passage deals with is the period of the Dark Ages (600–1517).

A. The Destination—Revelation 2:18a
And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write.
The destination of this letter is to the angel of the church in Thyatira. The Greek name Thyatira means “continual or perpetual sacrifice” and for that reason it is a fitting description of the church of the Dark Ages. It was during this period that the Roman Catholic doctrine of the “continual sacrifice” in the mass was developed.

B. The Description of the Messiah—Revelation 2:18b
These things says the Son of God, who has his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like unto burnished brass.
Every letter contains a description of the Messiah; here, Yeshua (Jesus) is described as the Son of God with eyes like a flame of fire and feet like burnished brass. These are all symbols of judgment. The point of this description of the Messiah is that He is going to judge this particular church.

C. The Commendation—Revelation 2:19
I know your works, and your love and faith and ministry and patience, and that your last works are more than the first.
The commendation is that their works were good and they have achieved things. It is not that these things are not appreciated, they are.

D. The Condemnation—Revelation 2:20–23
It is at this point that the first woman comes into the picture. In this condemnation, John points out two things: the toleration of Jezebel and the judgment of Jezebel.

  1. The Toleration of Jezebel—Revelation 2:20
But I have this against you, that you suffer the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess; and she teaches and seduces my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.
It is highly unlikely that there was an actual woman by the name of Jezebel who was a problem in the church of Thyatira. After all, Jezebel is not a Greek name, but a Phoenician name, in fact, the Phoenicians had disappeared as a separate ethnic entity by this time. This is most likely a reference to the Jezebel of the Old Testament to describe the state of the church at Thyatira. Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who married Ahab, the king of Israel (1 Kg. 16:29–33). She introduced the worship of Baal, a new pagan religious system, which resulted in massive idolatry in the Northern Kingdom. Jezebel in Thyatira represents Roman Catholicism within Christendom during the Dark Ages. Thus Jezebel is a very real picture of what the Roman Catholic Church evolved into during the period of the Dark Ages. In this New Testament application of the name Jezebel, the picture is that once again paganism and a new religious system have been introduced, this time into the Church, resulting in idolatry, which is spiritual fornication. By the Dark Ages, many pagan elements were introduced into the Church that resulted in a new religious system, bearing little resemblance to the New Testament Church.
It was during this period that ten false doctrines were introduced into the Church. First, baptismal regeneration: the belief that one needs to be baptized in order to be saved; this gave the ritual of a few drops of water a tremendous amount of saving power.
Secondly, justification by works: the belief that one is not saved by grace through faith alone, although this is necessary, but that works are also essential to salvation.
Thirdly, the worship of images. Catholics claim that they are worshipping only what the image represents, not the image itself. Yet in the end, people cross themselves or get down to their knees when they behold a statue, and without a doubt, that is a form of idolatry. In fact, when God gave the commandment against idolatry, He pointed out that they are not to make an image for the purpose of bowing down before it.
Fourthly, celibacy for the clergy: the belief that celibacy made one more spiritual; therefore, the priesthood had to live celibate lives. This created a distinction between the clergy and the laity.
Fifth, confessionalism: the practice where one had to confess his sins to a priest in order for those sins to be absolved. But the Bible teaches that the confession of sins against God should be made to God alone, and confession of wrongs committed against a brother must be confessed to the brother wronged, not to some third party sitting in a booth.
Sixth, purgatory: the belief that when one dies he may not be bad enough for Hell nor good enough for Heaven, so he undergoes a period of purging in purgatory, in which his sins are purged in order to qualify him for Heaven.
Seventh, transubstantiation: the teaching that the bread turns into the real body of Yeshua, and the wine turns into the real blood of the Messiah by the blessing of the priest; by so doing, there is a re-sacrifice in the mass.
Eighth, the selling of indulgences: the teaching that one can reduce his or her relatives’ time in purgatory by buying a certain number of indulgences.
Ninth, penance: the belief that by means of self-affliction, by means of tormenting some part of the body, one can also atone in some way for sins.
Tenth, Mariolatry: the worship of Mary, elevating her to a sinless state and to the state of being the mother of God and the declaration of her deity.
  2. The Judgment of Jezebel—Revelation 2:21–23
And I gave her time that she should repent; and she willed not to repent of her fornication. Behold, I cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of her works. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he that searches the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.
The judgment is that the woman Jezebel is destined to be cast into the Great Tribulation, and her children, the adherents of Roman Catholicism, are going to die as part of God’s judgment on Jezebel. Whereas the true Church will be raptured out of the earth before the Tribulation starts, this false church will have to go through the Tribulation and be destroyed.
    E. The Exhortation—Revelation 2:24–25
But to you I say, to the rest that are in Thyatira, as many as have not this teaching, who know not the deep things of Satan, as they are wont to say; I cast upon you none other burden. Nevertheless that which ye have, hold fast till I come.
The word of exhortation concerns those who are not part of the Jezebel system and do not know the deep things of Satan, because Catholicism must be viewed as the satanic counterfeit to true New Testament teachings. The exhortation is for those who are not involved in this false system; they are to simply hold fast to what they have that is pure, which is the New Testament truth in contrast to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. This alone will take all their spiritual energy in light of the times in which they are living.
    F. The Promise—Revelation 2:26–29
This promise is twofold: salvation and authority in the Messianic Kingdom. First, they will given true authority in verses 26–27: And he that overcomes, and he that keeps my works unto the end, to him will I give authority over the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to shivers; as I also have received of my Father.
The overcomer, the one who overcomes the problems of Jezebel, will be given true authority in the Millennium, in contrast to the false authority practiced by this church.

  3. Secondly, he will be given the Morning Star in verses 28–29: and I will give him the morning star. He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
According to Revelation 22:16, the morning star represents the Messiah Himself. Therefore, the one who overcomes is the one who trusts the Messiah for his salvation, and trusts Him alone, not those ten pagan doctrines. Because he trusts the Messiah alone for his salvation, he has the Morning Star, the Messiah.

    II. THE SUN-CLOTHED WOMAN—REVELATION 12:1–17
The second woman portrayed in this section represents the nation of Israel. She is introduced in this chapter dealing with Israel in the Tribulation. This chapter can be divided into three main units: the summary of Satan’s persecution of Israel, the reason for Satan’s persecution of Israel, and the details of Satan’s persecution of Israel.
    A. The Summary of Satan’s Persecution of Israel—Revelation 12:1–6
The first five verses deal with Satan’s persecution of Israel in history, while verse 6 deals with the persecution in the future, in the Great Tribulation. Verses 1–5 contain a historical summary.
John saw a vision of the second woman in verses 1–2: And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars; and she was with child; and she cries out, travailing in birth, and in pain to be delivered.
This woman is portrayed as being arrayed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and twelve stars in a crown on her head. All of this harks back to Joseph’s famous dream in Genesis 37:9–11, from which the meaning of these symbols can be determined. The sun represents Jacob; the moon represents Rachel, who later become a symbol of Jewish motherhood; and the twelve stars represent the twelve sons of Jacob, who fathered the Twelve Tribes of Israel. In these verses, the woman Israel is viewed at a certain point of history: just before the birth of the Messianic Son.
As she was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, already having birth-pangs, and about ready to produce the Child, at that point, an attempt was made to destroy the Child in verses 3–4: And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his heads seven diadems. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stands before the woman that is about to be delivered, that when she is delivered he may devour her child.
In verse 3, John sees a great red dragon, which is Satan in all his fierceness. He is described as having seven heads and ten horns, which represent the final form of the Fourth Gentile Empire now under Satan’s control and authority.
In verse 4, Satan uses his access to the earth to come down from his present third abode, the atmospheric heavens, and brings his entire demonic cohort down with him. The one-third part of the stars that Satan draws with his tail represents the fallen angels, for one third of the entire angelic host fell with Satan. Satan brings all of these angels down to the Land of Israel for the purpose of trying to destroy the Child when the He is born. Generally, Satan tried to use government to do so, for he is the prince of the powers of this world. He used the Roman Empire against the people of Israel. More specifically, he used Herod to slaughter the babes of Bethlehem in order to try to destroy the Messianic Child. Throughout the ministry of Yeshua, there were a number of attempts to have Him killed either prematurely or in the wrong manner. If He had died at any time other than the Jewish Passover, and any way other than by means of crucifixion, there would have been no atonement. It was not only the death of Jesus that was necessary; His death had to occur at a specific time, the Passover, and in a specific way—by crucifixion. Many attempts were made to have Him killed either prematurely, that is, before Passover, or in the wrong manner, such as, by sword or by stoning. But all such attempts failed with the statement that his hour was not yet come. That is what verses 3–4 are dealing with: the continuous attempts to destroy the Child, either at the wrong time or in the wrong way.
Eventually, His hour did come in verse 5: And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne.
Yeshua died at the proper time in the proper way. After His resurrection, He was caught up to God’s throne at the Ascension from the Mount of Olives.
These first five verses contain a quick historical summary of the entire life of the Messiah, from just before His birth until His Ascension, and summarize the history of Satan’s persecution of this woman, Israel.
But verse 6 describes a persecution that is still future: And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a place prepared of God, that there they may nourish her a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
This verse looks forward to the middle of the Tribulation. Because of persecution, the woman will flee into the wilderness, to a place that God has prepared in advance. There she will hide for a duration of 3½ years, the same 3½ years of the second half of the Great Tribulation.
    B. The Reason for Satan’s Persecution of Israel—Revelation 12:7–12
While verse 6 shows the woman on the run, it does not explain why she is fleeing. This is explained in the second part of this chapter and gives the reason for Satan’s persecution of Israel.
In Satan’s third abode, war will break out between Michael and the elect angels against Satan and the fallen angels, according to verse 7: And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels going forth to war with the dragon; and the dragon warred and his angels.
In the end, Michael will be the victor in this battle, and three results will follow in verses 8–12. First, Satan will be cast out of the atmospheric heavens in verses 8–9: and they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.
Satan and his angels will be cast down to the earth, his fourth abode, and confined there for the second half of the Tribulation.
The second result is that there will be rejoicing in Heaven in verses 10–12a: And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying, Now is come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and ye that dwell in them.
Satan’s present access into Heaven will be permanently removed and he will never again have the privilege of being able to go into Heaven for the purpose of accusing the brethren.
The third result is that there will be woe for the earth and the sea in verse 12b: Woe for the earth and the sea: because the devil is gone down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time.
Once Satan is confined to the earth, he will know his time is short, only 3½ years. Knowing his time is short, he will be very, very angry.
Verses 1–6 describe Satan’s persecution of Israel, first in history and then in the Tribulation, causing the woman Israel to flee into a special place in the wilderness. Verses 7–12 give the reason behind it: Satan will be confined to the earth, and he will be very angry.
    C. The Details of Satan’s Persecution of Israel—Revelation 12:13–17
These verses provide the details of the satanic persecution of the woman Israel during the second half of the Tribulation. The thoughts of verses 6 and 12 are brought together in verse 13: And when the dragon saw that he was cast down to the earth, he persecuted the woman that brought forth the man child.
In verse 6, the woman is fleeing; in verse 12, Satan is cast down to the earth, and knowing his time is short, is very angry. In verse 13, knowing his time is short, he will persecute the woman Israel. Thus, the reason the woman is fleeing in verse 6 is because Satan is persecuting her in verse 13, and the reason he is persecuting her is because he knows his time is short, according to verse 12. From that point on, there will be an all out war against the Jews during the second half of the Tribulation.
Verse 14 repeats the thoughts of verse 6, pointing out that the woman will flee into the wilderness, to a place that God has prepared: And there were given to the woman the two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness unto her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
There she will hide for 3½ years, the second half of the Tribulation. According to Micah 2:12–13, the place in the wilderness where she will hide is known in Hebrew as Bozrah, also known in Greek as Petra.
The means by which Satan will persecute the Jews is given in verse 15: And the serpent cast out of his mouth after the woman water as a river, that he might cause her to be carried away by the stream.
The verse states that he will spew out water like a river, causing a flood. Whenever the figure of a flood is used symbolically, it is always a symbol of a military invasion. So the means of persecution will be a military invasion that will cause the collapse of the State of Israel in the middle of the Tribulation. Though the purpose of this invasion will be to wipe out all the Jews, it will fail.
The reason for the failure will be divine intervention in verse 16: And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
The earth will open up to swallow this river. The opening of the earth is a symbol of divine intervention, for this is one of the ways God intervened in the Old Testament. Thus, the attempt to wipe out the Jews in the middle of the Tribulation will not succeed.
Therefore, Satan will then inaugurate a long term program to destroy the Jews in verse 17: And the dragon waxed wroth with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, that keep the commandments of God, and hold the testimony of Jesus.
He will war against two groups of Jews in particular: first, those who keep the commandments of God, the Orthodox Jews; and secondly, those who hold the testimony of Jesus, the believing Jewish Remnant of the Tribulation, as well as the 144,000 Jewish evangelists of Revelation 7.
So, the second woman is Israel, and she will be persecuted by Satan. Chapter 13 of Revelation speaks of the two individuals Satan will use for this purpose: the Antichrist and the False Prophet.

    III. THE GREAT HARLOT—REVELATION 17:1–18
This third woman represents Ecclesiastical Babylon, the one world religious system that will be in effect during the Great Tribulation. This chapter can be divided into six units: the description of the harlot, the crime of the harlot, the governmental system, the meaning of the term “many waters,” the destruction of the harlot, and the abode of the harlot.
    A. The Description of the Harlot—Revelation 17:1–5
The Apostle John was given an invitation to come and view the harlot in verse 1: And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven bowls, and spoke with me, saying, Come hither, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot that sits upon many waters.
This harlot is the counterfeit bride of the Messiah. Here is a harlot or a prostitute in contrast to the pure virgin, the Bride of the Messiah. This is the final form of the Jezebel system within Roman Catholicism (Rev. 2:20–22). As a verb, to prostitute something is to take something that has a proper use and use it in an improper way. This is what a harlot does with the sexual act. Sex has a proper use, but it can be used in an improper way. In the Bible, any false religious system is viewed as spiritual fornication or spiritual prostitution (Hos. 1–2; Jer. 2:20; 3:1–9; Ezek. 16:15–41; 23:5–44). Here is a religious system that stands in contradistinction to the Bride of the Messiah and is called a harlot, using religion falsely. There is true religion (Jas. 1:26–27), but here is false religion. Furthermore, she is viewed as sitting on many waters, which represent peoples and nations (v. 15). This shows that she will exercise religious authority over many peoples and nations.
Furthermore, she will have the support of the civil government in verses 2–3: with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and they that dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her fornication. And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness: and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
In verse 2, she will have the support of civil government during the first half of the Tribulation. This will be the epitome of the unity of church and state. In verse 3, she is viewed as riding on a scarlet-colored beast that has seven heads and ten horns; this is representative of the governmental system of the first half of the Great Tribulation period, signifying that she rules with the support of civil government.
John identifies the harlot in verses 4–5: And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations, even the unclean things of her fornication, and upon her forehead a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
In verse 4, she is pictured as being both rich and influential. She is also guilty of spiritual fornication, because she has in her hand a golden cup full of abominations, even the unclean things of her fornication. This woman is representative of Ecclesiastical Babylon, the one-world religious system that will rule the religious affairs of the first half of the Great Tribulation. In verse 5, she is given the title: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. This will be the final form of the apostate church, which began in the United States in the early 1900s and continues to the present day. Ecclesiastical Babylon will be a combination of all false religions, false Protestantism, and the Jezebel element of Catholicism, into a one-world religious system.
    B. The Crime of the Harlot—Revelation 17:6
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with a great wonder.
Her crime is a work of persecution, and she will persecute all those that will not join her in her harlotries. Those believers living at that time who will not join this one world religious system will be persecuted by it.
    C. The Governmental System—Revelation 17:7–14
And the angel said unto me, Wherefore did you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that you saw was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss, and to go into perdition. And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, they whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast, how that he was, and is not, and shall come. Here is the mind that has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sits: and they are seven kings; the five are fallen, the one is, the other is not yet come; and when he comes, he must continue a little while. And the beast that was, and is not, is himself also an eighth, and is of the seven; and he goes into perdition. And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but they receive authority as kings, with the beast, for one hour. These have one mind, and they give their power and authority unto the beast. These shall war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they also shall overcome that are with him, called and chosen and faithful.
This unit is a description of the governmental system that will support Ecclesiastical Babylon during the first half of the Tribulation. Briefly, this governmental system is that of ten kings ruling co-equally over ten kingdoms. In the middle of the Tribulation, all the kings will turn their authority over to the Antichrist, who will then rule the world until the end of the Tribulation, with the Second Coming of the Messiah.
    D. The Meaning of the Term Many Waters—Revelation 17:15
And he said unto me, The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
The term many waters upon which the woman sits represents humanity, the world’s population. This pictures the fact that Ecclesiastical Babylon will rule the religious affairs of the entire world for the first half of the Tribulation.
    E. The Destruction of the Harlot—Revelation 17:16–17
And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her utterly with fire. For God did put in their hearts to do his mind, and to come to one mind, and to give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God should be accomplished.
This unit describes the destruction of Ecclesiastical Babylon that will occur in the middle of the Tribulation: she will be destroyed by the ten horns, which are the kings ruling at that time and by the beast, which is the Antichrist. Although during the first half of the Tribulation, this religious system will have the support of government, in the middle of the Tribulation, the Antichrist and his ten allies will destroy this one-world religious system, opening the way for the Antichrist to become the one world religious ruler, as well as the one world political ruler.
    F. The Abode of the Harlot—Revelation 17:18
And the woman whom you saw is the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth.
This woman also represents a city, specifically the city where this religion will be headquartered. Taken literally, this is the rebuilt city of Babylon of the Great Tribulation.

IV. THE BRIDE AND WIFE OF THE MESSIAH—REVELATION 19:6–9; 21:9–22:5
The fourth woman is the Bride and Wife of the Messiah, portrayed in Revelation 19:6–9: And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunders, saying, Hallelujah: for the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us rejoice and be exceeding glad, and let us give the glory unto him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife has made herself ready. And it was given unto her that she should array herself in fine linen, bright and pure: for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. And he said unto me, Write, Blessed are they that are bidden to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he said unto me, These are true words of God.
This passage pictures the Bride as already in Heaven, therefore, this is an event that takes place after the Rapture of the Church. Furthermore, the special white gown she is wearing is interpreted to represent the righteous acts of the saints. This event occurs after the Judgment Seat of the Messiah, during which all the “wood, hay, stubble” will be burned away, and all the “gold, silver, precious stone” will be purified, so that all that will be showing on the Bride is her righteous acts (Rom. 14:10–12; 1 Cor. 3:10–15; 2 Cor. 5:10). She has been raptured, she has been purified, and now she will participate in the marriage ceremony so that the Bride will become the Wife of the Messiah.
Revelation 21:9–22:5 describes what will be the eternal abode of the Bride. Verses 9b–10 state: and he spoke with me, saying, Come hither, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.
When John was taken up, he saw the eternal New Jerusalem. Revelation 21:11–22:5 describe the holy city Jerusalem. The point of this passage is that eternal New Jerusalem will be the place where the Bride and Wife of the Messiah will dwell for all eternity. While there will be a temporary home for the Bride on earth during the Messianic Kingdom, her eternal home will be in the New Jerusalem.
